In order to understand the hierarchy of this tropical plant, let’s take a look back at where it came from and how it’s grown.
Relatively new to the mainstream world, Kratom has actually been around for centuries. Grown in Southeast Asia, Kratom farmers and their families knew the value of these vibrant green leaves, and would use them to keep them going through long days of hard labor. Indeed, even when parts of SE Asia began to embrace Western pharmaceuticals, these indigenous people continued (and still do) to favor the trees which grew in their own back yard.
Kratom, or Mitragyna speciosa, grows prolifically throughout Southeast Asia, and can be found wild in the jungles, or contained within small garden farms, and absolutely thrives on the wonderful conditions which the location offers. Warm humid weather, with soil kept moist thanks to the surrounding oceans and inland lakes and waterways, the ground is rich in volcanic minerals which gives it the perfect acidity in which to produce the alkaloids which Kratom is well-known for.
Grown and harvested by farmers who have had their skills passed down from the generations before them, Kratom leaves are picked by hand and only as they are needed, which leaves the tree laden with other leaves to add moisture to the tree to allow it to continue to mature and grow.
Almost like a traffic light system, Kratom leaves go through a sequence of colors which tell the farmer when to harvest them, depending on what they want. While the leaves remain green, the veins through them don’t; for instance, white veined leaves are the youngest, with green being the ‘middle aged’ ones, and finally red, which denotes the oldest and most mature of all the leaves.
It is this color scheme which tells the farmers, and the consumers, how potent the strain is, so knowing your colors is essential in order to get the best out of Kratom.
We mentioned the alkaloids which are the all-important components in Kratom, and although there are more than 40 different alkaloids present, the two most important ones are mitragynine, and 7-hydroxymitragynine.
Every strain holds both alkaloids, but as the leaf matures from white, to green, and then to red, the concentration of 7-hydroxymitragynine grows, making the leaf more potent.
Once the farmer has picked the leaves necessary, the veins are removed before the leaves are dried and then ground down into a fine, soft powder. (It is well worth noting that Kratom powder, regardless of the strain, should be light to the touch, a vibrant green (regardless of strain) and have an earthy but not chemical smell).
